Herpes is an STD caused by HSV (herpes simplex virus). There are two types of the HSV. HSV-1 and HSV-2. Usually, HSV-1 is the virus associated
with oral herpes, and HSV-2 is the virus associated with genital herpes. Genital herpes is a lifelong STD that causes painful outbreaks of blisters in the

Women With HSV FAQ

1. In the past year I have continual vaginal burning that lasts for weeks and sometimes months. How could I control the burning? What
do you suggest I do?

When HSV becomes active the virus travels through the nerve pathways. Depending on the pathway the virus travels depends on the location of a
herpes outbreak. The burning feeling could be caused by HSV coming to the surface of the skin. When HSV surfaces the skin a visual herpes
outbreak may not occur. When HSV surfaces the skin we refer to that as shedding. During shedding herpes is more likely to spread to a partner.

The burning feeling could be very uncomfortable. Living healthy is really the best way to help weaken HSV. Don’t eat too many greasy foods, drink
water rather than sugar drinks, exercising, don’t smoke, avoid stress and think positive. Doing those things will strengthen the immune system and decrease the chance of experiencing symptoms. You may also want to ask your doctor about Acyclovir or Famvir.

2. I am female, just been diagnose with herpes and I have sores around my vagina. It's the time of the month for me now, I'm allergic to sanitary pads and I'm too sore to use a tampon. Please advice on what I should do.

Herpes sores could be annoying and painful in some cases. On the positive side HSV-1 usually doesn't cause as many genital herpes outbreak as genital HSV-2. A female could use menstrual cup for her period. A menstrual cup is harder to find than a tampon. That's about all I can think of.
If see a doctor who has knowledge about STD's I would suggest asking if there is anything else you can use. Some people may not want to use a menstrual cup.
